A combinatory gene expression map of the embryonic zebrafish diencephalon was constructed by multicolor fluorescent in situ hybridization. The relative topography of gene expression domains was consistent with a diencephalic three-prosomere organization. Conserved intraprosomeric subdivisions were revealed: precommissural, juxtacommissural and commissural pretectal domains, thalamic and prethalamic molecularly distinct rostral and caudal domains, and a histogenetic domain of the zebrafish prethalamic eminence. Our combinatorial gene expression map conformed with a common bauplan for the gnathostome diencephalon from fish to mammals.
