Injections of retrograde tracers in the superior colliculus (SC) of tree shrews labeled neurons in locations within areas 17 (V1) and 18 (V2) and up to five topographically organized temporal cortical areas. Injections that included deeper layers of the SC also labeled neurons in medial frontal cortex, likely in premotor cortex. Few, if any, labeled neurons were observed in somatosensory, primary motor, or auditory cortex. All regions shaded in dark gray are regions that were observed to project to the superior colliculus in tree shrews.
