Medial preoptic area (MPOA) is known to be critical for maternal behavior in mammals. We investigated the chemical neuroanatomy of the essential MPOA subregion for maternal behavior. We mapped pup-induced c-Fos expression in the MPOA of female mice. We also determined the specific area that is necessary for maternal behavior by lesion study. The central MPOA is the indispensable subregion for mouse maternal behavior, and GABAergic and peptidergic neurons in this area were transcriptionally activated during maternal behavior.
