Hippocampal CA3–CA1 pyramidal cells localize AMPA receptor subunit mRNAs and the translation machinery to the apical dendrites, whereas GABAergic interneurons localize them to multiple dendrites. Dentate gyrus granule cells virtually restrict them to the soma. Such diversities suggest that different neuron types may use different mRNA localization and translational mechanisms. These differences may reflect and contribute to determining the distinct roles played by pyramidal cells, granule cells, and interneurons within and beyond the hippocampal networks, and may be related to their functional state.
