Using conditional adenoviral tracer combined with transgenic mice expressing Cre recombinase in the hypothalamic ventromedial nucleus (VMH), the present study shows that neurons in the VMH project to discrete areas in the brainstem including the parabrachial nucleus, rostral ventrolateral medulla, retrotrapezoid nucleus, and nucleus of the solitary tract. This study thus provides an anatomical basis for the possibility that VMH neurons may modulate autonomic activity via direct efferent inputs into the autonomic centers in the brainstem.
