Seen with the naked eye: A new ratiometric colorimetric probe toward fluoride has been designed based on the fluoride-promoted cleavage of the Si[BOND]O bond by using intramolecular charge transfer as a signaling mechanism. Upon the addition of F, the probe changes color from colorless to deep blue and is visible with the naked eye. This change is accompanied by a dramatic shift of the maximum absorption wavelength (≈230 nm; see scheme).
