On the surface of things: Three amphiphilic tris(bipyridyl)–ruthenium(II) complexes with different chain lengths were found to form a monolayer at the air–water interface. Langmuir–Blodgett (LB) film formation was characterised by surface pressure–area isotherms and Brewster angle microscopy. Optical responses observed on oxidation of RuII centres in the LB monolayer by Ce4+ demonstrate a one-input sequential logic-gate operation (see figure).
