Just passing through: S-galactosyl–oligo(Arg) conjugates (see scheme) as new inducers for protein biosynthesis in bacteria have been synthesized. In vivo expression of green fluorescence protein (GFP) was induced by S-Gal–(Arg)n at the T5 promoter in E. coli. The level of GFP expression was directly related to the number of arginine moieties in each peptide, which are proposed to be responsible for how well each peptide passes through the E. coli membrane.
