All in the family: A family of mesoporous materials functionalised with fluorophores (pyrene, dansyl and fluorescein) have been prepared, characterised and used for the fluorogenic recognition of nitroaromatic explosives (see red hexagons in figure). The emission of the pyrene and dansyl functionalised materials was quenched upon the addition of picric acid or 2,4,6-trinitrophenylmethylnitramine, hence easy detection was possible.
