Spheres of influence: α-MnS hollow spheres (MHSs) and their hybrids with reduced graphene oxide (RGO) have been fabricated by a one-pot template-free solvothermal method. Compared with pristine MHSs, the MHS–RGO hybrids exhibit enhanced microwave absorption properties with a larger reflection loss and a wider absorption band (see figure), and enhanced lithium storage performance with a stable capacity of about 500 mAh g−1 after 50 discharge–charge cycles.
