100 % efficient: Activation of methane by the third-row transition-metal cation Os+ has been studied experimentally by guided-ion-beam tandem mass spectrometry and is found to be 100 % efficient at room temperature (see figure). Bond energies for OsC+, OsCH+, and OsCH3+ and a limit for OsCH2+ are measured. Quantum chemical calculations indicate that the structure of the dehydrogenation product is probably HOsCH+, rather than OsCH2+, in contrast to previous work.
