Helping hand: Depending on the nature of electron-withdrawing groups in vinyl halides, the ion-pairing effect in nucleophilic vinylic substitution reaction with carbonylmetalates [Na(K)][M(CO)nL] can be inverted, and in case of CO and CN groups, which act as hard donor centers for Na or K cations, dramatic cation assistance can be observed (see scheme).
