Glowing report: Benzoporphyrins and porphyrins have been explored as fluorescent probes towards different metal ions. Probe 1 displays a high sensitivity for and selectivity response to Hg2+ with a remarkable fluorescence intensity enhancement. These compounds show sensorial ability in the gas phase and solid state, and when 1 is immobilized in polymethylmethacrylate it is able to discriminate between Zn2+ and Hg2+.
