The cover picture shows the ability of benzoporphyrin derivatives to emit in the red zone of the UV/Vis spectrum when excited with green light; represented by the lighthouses of Barra (Aveiro) and Cabo Espichel (Lisbon) in Portugal. These lighthouses are also symbolic of the cooperation between the two research groups. The studied functionalized porphyrins showed a remarkable emission enhancement and sensing ability for Hg2+ metal ions. The binding with Hg2+ induced strong changes in the ground state allowing the application of these compounds as chromogenic and fluorogenic metal-ion sensors.
