Power of two: Three new ruthenium-containing ligands have been developed with the aim of preparing coupled Ru[BOND]Mn2 complexes such as 1 (see picture). Although dyad 1 is capable of catalyzing chemical water oxidation, photochemical water oxidation in the presence of an external electron acceptor fails. The photophysical behavior can be explained by the presence of an intricate excited-state manifold.
