Cellulose unchained: Quantum chemical computations disclose that the degradation of a cellulose chain on the crystalline surface forms a levoglucosan end (LG-end) and then levoglucosan is successively produced from the LG-end. These reaction features are consistent with experimental observations, and the hydrogen network plays crucial roles in the reaction.
