Species elucidation: Palladium clusters with a modified electronic structure relative to bare palladium metal or palladium oxides allow selective active species for the direct synthesis of H2O2 (see picture). Nitrogen atoms in substitution positions in the carbon support accomplish the best strategy for the stabilization of the active palladium.
