Sustainable bottom-ash conversion: A new sorbent synthesis route that forgoes additives and leverages, the very characteristics that make bottom ashes problematic, is presented. This simple yet effective route proves to the chemical industry that material and energy streams inherent to an original process can be sustainably utilized to improve its “greenness”. In this case bottom ashes are converted into microporous materials and are used for heavy metal sorption.
