Unlikely allies: Cu/Ni nanocatalysts with a unique morphology are prepared by thermal reduction of a perovskite LaNixCu1−xO3 precursor (x=1, 0.9, and 0.7; see picture). Cu is released first during H2 pretreatment and forms a CuLa alloy. Next, mostly nanosized Ni is generated at a higher temperature before the CuLa alloy decomposes and Cu decorates the Ni nanoparticles.
