Breaking up is hard to do: Model studies reveal entirely different mechanisms for reforming of C2 hydrocarbon oxygenates on ceria and Pt/ceria catalyst. Selective CC bond scission is possible without any carbon formation for ethylene glycol on stoichiometric CeO2(111), even in the absence of any noble metal. This finding is in sharp contrast to other C2 oxygenates such as ethanol or acetic acid.
