Deserted membranes for fuel cells: Innovative water management by thin-film, dual-layered electrode is demonstrated. A self-humidifying membrane electrode assembly is designed to preserve water by forming a phase-separated, thin-film catalyst layer on another membrane. The operation of an assembled water-management-free fuel cell is successfully demonstrated by balancing the liquid-water release, showing a dramatically enhanced performance at 0 % relative humidity (see picture).
