Small can endure: A silica-coated nickel on silica (Ni/SiO2) catalyst with nickel nanoparticles of ca. 5.2 nm shows high stability during dry reforming of methane (DRM) at 800 °C. The catalyst retains its initial high activity for 170 h, whereas a Ni/SiO2 catalyst without a silica coating shows a severe degradation in activity, caused by sintering of the nanoparticles and coke formation. The silica coating effectively ensures long-term stability of the catalyst.
