Counter electrode culture: Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) with a counter electrode (CE) of HfO2 supported on mesoporous graphitic carbon (MGC) exhibit high power conversion efficiencies for the I3/I and disulfide/thiolate redox couples, which are greater than those of DSSCs that use a Pt CE. Our calculations provide an understanding of these superior catalytic properties.
