We use quantitative measures of population connectivity to help address the problems of shifting baselines – wherein each generation defines the “natural” state of an ecosystem by what they are first exposed to. By quantifying the number of migrants necessary to maintain a species in the collective consciousness of a people, we show how much population connectivity is necessary to forestall this cultural amnesia.
