We combined experimental data (cross-fostering) and long-term breeding data from a young Ficedula flycatcher hybrid zone to assess whether life-history divergence causes environmentally dependent effects on hybrid nestlings. We show that life-history divergence can induce environmentally dependent relative fitness of hybrid offspring, and we argue that this will influence the amount and direction of gene flow between the two parental species.
