We report the synthesis, structure, characterisation and environmental exposure of CdSeS quantum dots (QDs) and CdSeS/ZnS core-shell QDs to microwave radiation. After ZnS capping, the core/shell structured CdSeS/ZnS QDs exhibit higher luminescence and photostabilily than that of CdSeS core QD. The CdSeS/ZnS QDs were successfully used to image live Hela cells, showing promise for use in biological studies.
