Compound 1, the first example of a heptatungstate polymer, has been synthesized and exhibits good solid-state stability at room temperature. However, dissociation of [HW7O24]5– to [W6O19]2– in aqueous solution was observed by ESI-MS. This suggests that the coordination bonds around [HW7O24]5– play an important role in the isolation and stabilization of the heptatungstate polyanion.
