Liquid ammonia and methylamine were used as solvents to prepare the trigonal-pyramidal [TeS3]2– and [TeSe3]2– anions from Zn, Mn, Te, S and Se. Heating to 50 °C in thick-walled glass ampoules gave the metal ammine-trichalcogenido-tellurates in high yield, including the unusual complexes [Zn(NH3)6]2+ and [Mn(CH3NH2)6]2+. Some of the compounds crystallise in polar structures.
