A liquid–liquid interfacial coordination mechanism has been developed for the ynthesis of free-standing metal–organic framework (MOF) membranes. Use of the immiscible solvents DMF and hexane permits zinc nitrate and terephthalic acid (TPA or H2BDC) as well as catalytic triethylamine, to form a MOF membrane with experimentally validated potential in gas separation applications.
