The chemistry of viologen (V2+)-based crystals is reviewed. As a result of face and side contacts, V2+ templates the rare MX52– (M = Bi, Sb; X = halide) chain of trans-connected octahedra, which leads to a fascinating family of ferroelectrics and a series of closely related chlorobismuthate networks; this allows relevant analysis of the structure–photochromic properties of these hybrid materials.
