The structure-directing potential of lanthanoid cations for controlling POM architectures is combined with the versatile {SiW9O34} precursor. Depending on the synthetic conditions, {SiW9O34} can be transformed into Keggin-type sandwich compounds or into 2D/3D arrangements of the open Wells–Dawson silicotungstate {Si2W18O66}. This amplifies the linker functions of mid-lanthanoid cations in POM design.
