Bis(aryl)acenaphthenequinonediimine (Ar-BIAN) ligands form complexes with CuI that absorb in the visible and near-infrared (NIR) regions. The ligand substituents have a profound effect on the energy and intensity of the metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) absorption. Despite the redox activity of the ligands, neither the copper center nor the ligands change oxidation state after complexation.
