β-MgAl2C2 was synthesized at 900 °C in a closed system with the use of Li2C2 in a solid-state metathesis reaction. This new synthesis method for ternary carbides employs Li2C2 as a source of carbon ions and can be applied to the synthesis of other multinary carbides.
