A straightforward and tuneable one-pot aqueous synthetic route yields an array of nanomaterials spanning gold nanoparticles, hollow tungsten oxide structures and polyoxometalates. The single-crystalline polyoxotungstates can thereafter produce a collection of colloidal gold nanoparticles of controlled size and shape without harsh synthetic conditions and highly toxic reducing agents.
