The pyrimidine-4,6-dicarboxilato ligand preferentially renders planar 1D motifs when coordinating to first-row divalent metal ions. This structural limitation has been avoided by focusing on three approaches that share a common aim: to modulate the coordination sphere by replacing/eliminating solvent molecules. A complete thermal characterisation and steric hindrance analysis is reported.
