The fully-extended structure, albeit appealing for its potential applications, is the least investigated among polypeptide conformations. Here, we show that this 3D structure is stabilized by a C-terminal ester moiety. However, C-termination with a–CONHR (R = H, alkyl) group will convert it into the much more contracted 310 helix.
