A system of Navier-Stokes equations with free capillary surface and Stefan problem is used to model the partial melting of a workpiece of metal. The ALE finite element method used for discretization is augmented by a mesh-moving technique, which explicitly tracks the moving boundaries. With this method, it is possible to use a sharp interface model, which accurately resolves the influences of the moving boundaries on the flow field and thus on the overall energy transport.
