An efficient parallel spectral method based on an original hybrid MPI/OpenMP strategy is described in this paper. Good scalability and very fast wall-clock times per iteration are obtained. Very large simulations are therefore accessible while keeping the attractive features of spectral methods - accuracy, exponential convergence, computational efficiency, conservative properties. This is illustrated by a direct numerical simulation of the transition and interaction of the boundary layers developing from the entrance section of a plane channel.
