We introduce a new spectral collocation discretisation for the one-dimensional shallow water equations on semi-infinite domains. A semi-implicit, semi-Lagrangian approach is used for time discretisation. We use the method to implement extensions of finite size domain fluid dynamics models for environmental applications with damping layers of essentially unlimited size. The flexibility of the proposed scheme allows for a much lower computational cost with respect to standard approaches.
