Developing a novel one-way hybrid algorithm, the DSMC and Navier–Stokes (NS) solvers are unified in one framework to solve the rarefied flows more robustly. Using this algorithm, we do not need a pure DSMC simulator to solve the entire shock wave region; although the shock wave region is a non-equilibrium one. We show that the current algorithm can predict the surficial properties very accurately while spending much less computational time comparing with the coupled DSMS–NS or pure DSMC solvers.
