This paper is concerned with the monolithic finite element discretisation of the Boussinesq problem in three dimensions. We propose a new adaptive time integrator and optimal preconditioned iterative solver. The methodology is tested on physically relevant cases of laterally heated cavities and the Rayleigh-Benard convection.
