A stabilized finite element method, to carry out the linear stability analysis of a two-dimensional base flow to three-dimensional perturbations that are periodic along span, is presented. The instabilities in the circular Couette flow are utilized to validate the method. The method is used to investigate the connection between the oblique and parallel modes of vortex shedding for flow past a circular cylinder.
