The alkyl esters ofp-hydroxybenzoic acid (parabens), used as preservatives in consumer products, possess oestrogenic activity. In this paper, we report thatmany of the concentrations of five parabensrecently measured in 158/160 human breast tissue samples are sufficient, either alone or in combination, to stimulate the proliferation of oestrogen-responsive MCF-7 human breast cancer cells in vitro.Functional consequences of parabens in human breast tissue should be assessed therefore on the basis of all five parabens and not individual parabens.
