Optical Thromboelastography (OTEG) is a novel diagnostic technology for quantifying blood coagulation status in patients. OTEG evaluates laser speckle fluctuations, reflected from a few drops of blood. Spatio-temporal speckle analyses yield 2-dimensional viscoelasticity maps, visualizing incipient micro-clot formation at distinct rates in normal and coagulopathic patients. These findings demonstrate the exquisite sensitivity and accuracy of OTEG in diagnosing coagulopathies within a few minutes and highlights the potential for point-of-care use.
