The glaze on archaeological shards and those of Ming dynasty origin have been studied using the index of polymerization (Ip), and results confirm that the two sets of shards are not likely to be of the same origin. The glaze depth profiling method is independent of the type and composition of the glaze, and that the concept of the Ip is of great utility in the study of silicate-based glazes/glasses.
