A pH-sensing nanoprobe based on surface-enhanced Raman scattering using nanostars under near-infrared excitations has been developed and investigated both experimentally and theoretically. A novel pH-sensing index, the surface-enhanced Raman scattering peak position for benzene ring stretching vibrational mode of p-mercaptobenzoic acid is observed in experiment and confirmed with density functional theory calculation.
