We present a Raman study investigating polyene pigments in the shells of bivalve larvae. We looked at spectra from seven species to determine the differences between species, how concentrations of pigments change in different regions of the shell, and if larvae are capable of incorporating pigments directly from source waters. This is the first study to use Raman spectroscopy to investigate pigments in shells of bivalve larvae.
