Hydrogel systems have been developed to allow for systematic manipulation of properties, such as stiffness, degradability, and cell interactions. The diverse range of hydrogel properties combined with advanced fabrication techniques can be used to engineer cartilage with depth-dependent properties like those in normal articular cartilage. These constructs have potential for regenerative treatment of cartilage defects.
