Three types of multilayer films are used to investigate the interplay between film properties and cell adhesion. Spreading areas of C2C12 myoblasts and 3T3 fibroblasts are found to be correlated with the film's stiffness and to be distributed over a unique curve, whatever the film's internal chemistry. By comparing with previous studies, we show that the effect of substrate stiffness on the cell spreading areas is material dependent.
