Photoremovable protecting groups can be applied to thin polymer films and hydrogels to achieve light-mediated remote control of their (bio)chemical and physical properties. Spatial, temporal and compositional control of the light-induced changes is possible. By using chromophores with selective sensitivity to different wavelengths, multiple functional states can be generated. This strategy offers interesting possibilities for the next generation of instructive materials for cell culture and tissue regeneration.
